Fun fact: the tallest sandcastle ever built stood 21.16 meters high. Tthat's about a seven-story building made of nothing but damp sand. A team in Blokhus, Denmark stacked it up in 2021 to claim the Guinness World Record, using thousands of tons of sand and a small army of sculptors. Somewhere out there is a bucket-and-spade hobbyist who looked at that and thought, amateurs.
Today's castle is far humbler, but the stakes feel just as high. The trophy was minutes away. Then disaster struck. Grab your magnifying glass. Game on.
The Seaside Cup was all but won. Four friends had spent the whole morning sculpting a towering sandcastle turrets, a moat, a working drawbridge of popsicle sticks and the judges were one dune away.
Then someone stomped it flat.
By the time the friends came sprinting back from the ice-cream truck, their masterpiece was a sad heap of rubble. Exactly one of the four did it. When the head judge asked what happened, here's what each of them said:
Theo: "Wren did it."
Uma: "I didn't do it."
Vince: "Theo is telling the truth."
Wren: "Uma is lying."
The judge folded her arms and smiled. "Well," she said, "exactly one of you is lying. That's all I need."
